What is health insurance?

Health insurance is an agreement between you and your insurance company where you pay a monthly amount plus a certain portion of your medical bills, and the insurer (company) agrees to pay the rest. At some point everyone will need medical care. Health insurance is there to help you cover the cost and protect you from very high and unexpected expenses.  Learn More about the Basics of Health Insurance

Different plans work for different people. The right plan for you will depend on many things such as how many times you go to the doctor per year, do you see a specialist (such as a heart doctor) or do you need prescriptions filled every month.

What if I have a medical condition — Will it be harder for me to get affordable health insurance?

No.  You cannot be turned down, or have your premiums increased, because you have a preexisting medical condition.

What if I don’t think I will be able to afford health insurance?

Depending on your income and family size, you may be able to get help paying for your health insurance. By completing the application for health insurance through the Marketplace, you will be able to see if you can get a tax credit or subsidy.
